Here's why!
Hey there's nothing wrong with a little spontaneity, and if that's what you live for more power to ya! However, for the vast majority, booking their wedding photographer is one of the first things they do once they get engaged. However, I hear this time and time again, from bride-to-be's that there soon-to-be husband wants to wait to book their wedding photographer. Why? Maybe save money or just isn't ready to start wedding planning.
So here's why waiting until the last minute to book a wedding photographer isn't helpful for you and your photographer. For starters, many photographers book 1-2 years out, and so your dream photographer may not have your date available. While many photographers offer an associate photographer to stand in their place if they are unavailable, others don't. You may be stuck with starting the process all over again.
Secondly, it's important to continue to build your relationship with your photographer throughout your engagement. This way on the day of your wedding you can feel relaxed and not worried about whether or not your vibing with your photographer. After all, you spend your entire wedding day with your photographer! This is why we offer a complementary engagement session so we can get to know the two of you on a more personal level. By booking your photographer last minute, they may not be able to get you onto their calendar in time before your wedding. If it is busy season (fall or spring) your photographer, may already be mostly booked with other sessions, and have to either scramble to fit you in, or may not have time in their schedule to fit you in at all, which would be a travesty. Or you just might get stuck having to do an engagement session during a season that isn't your favorite, like winter.
Third, if you want your engagement photos to be displayed at your reception it's possible you may not get your photos back in time to have them printed, or may have to opt to print photos too close to your wedding day where you get into overwhelm. For us, it can be about a 2-3 week turnaround time to get your photos back after your engagement session. Please note this does not include turnaround times for weddings.
